Iconic wines in the south-est of Sicily

We cultivate our lands with passion during centuries , including innovation and tradition

Producing wines with a big character and personality, expression of our terroir is by generation our focus. Low production for acres, attention to biodiversity and honouring for the environment are our philosophy.

La tenuta Poggio di Bortolone è sempre stata tramandata di padre in figlio.

The Poggio di Bortolone estate was become by Cosenza’s family at the end of 18th century, since that moment was handed down from father to son.

Poggio di Bortolone has been used for the cultivation of grapes, olives and wheat over many centuries and today the winery’s ancient wooden press and traditional oil mill are to be found amongst the relics of bygone days to remind visitors of the proud origins of the Estate. The old and now redundant limestone watermill, beside the river Para Para.

Today id Pierluigi, Ignazio’s son, seventh generation of the Cosenza family to manage Poggio di Bortolone.

Making great wine from the highest quality grapes gives me the opportunity to be creative while using winemaking techniques handed downfrom father to son

THE VINEYARDS

The vineyards which extend to approximately 15 hectares are surrounded by the higher ground and sheltered by the ridges to make optimal use of the hot Sicilian sun. The vines are planted along the valley floors throughout the estate where the sediment which is rich in nutrients, has collected.

The principal cultivated varietals are Nero d'Avola, Frappato and Grosso Nero which has almost become virtually extinct. During ‘90 we decided to introduce Syrah, Cabernet-sauvignon and Petit Verdot grapes.

THE OLIVE GROVE

Poggio di Bortolone isn’t only vineyard but also olive oil trees. Tonda Iblea, Nocellara Messinese and Nocellara Etnea are our variety. We cultivate our olives with dedication and we are so much pride to share with you our Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

The Estate’s viticulture practices restrict the number of bunches per vine to produce wine of the highest quality that exudes both character and personality. Our wines are realized only by grapes grown on Poggio di Bortolone to give you the high control and quality.

THE CELLAR

Good craftsmen always have good tools

The viticulture is supported by vinification techniques using the latest available technology housed in a purpose-built underground cellar providing year-round temperature and humidity control. This ‘up to the minute’ equipment optimises the ageing processes to enable the Estate to produce both refined and highly distinguished wines.
